The surgical removal of a live tapeworm with an interesting pathologic finding most likely representing the migration path: a case report of cerebral sparganosis

چکیده
Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic disease of the central nervous system that is caused by sparganum. Cerebral sparganosis occurs worldwide, but it is found more frequently in China, Japan, and Southeastern Asia (12). Sparganum, the second-stage larva of Spirometra mansoni, can produce chronic active inflammation through slow migration in the brain (1). They can also parasitize other sites of the human body, such as the subcutaneous tissue, body cavities and eyes, and survive for 5-20 years (3). In this paper, we report a case of cerebral sparganosis, including the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of local migration and the surgical finding of a live worm. A new pathological finding, a tunnel-like structure, was observed and most likely represented a sparganum migration path.

Cerebral sparganosis
The recently published article on cerebral sparganosis was very interesting (1). Indeed, Wang et al. described a relevant case study of sparganosis, which is an uncommon tapeworm infection that is sporadically reported and can be found in many tropical countries. Cerebral sparganosis has been documented in Thailand (2), and it is typically initially identified by brain imaging. One important co...

A 38-year-old Japanese man presented with a 2-year history of cerebellar ataxia, fever, and headaches. MRI revealed migration of the lesion (figure, A–C). CSF cytology showed eosinophilic meningitis (figure, D); serum and CSF ELISA were positive for Spirometra erinaceieuropaei. Human sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection by the larval cestode of Spirometra that results from ingesting the pl...
متن کاملFollow-Up MR Imaging for Cerebral Sparganosis.
The recent article on follow-up MR imaging for cerebral sparganosis is interesting. Li et al noted, “Migration is a notable feature of cerebral sparganosis.” This finding is quite interesting. Due to its basic nature, sparganosis is usually a chronic localized disease. According to a large series from Thailand, no observation of cerebral migration was noted. The “tunnel” sign is a new finding t...
متن کاملMeningioangiomatosis in an otherwise healthy 13 year-old boy: A case report with emphasis on histopathological findings
Meningioangiomatosis is regarded as a rare benign hamartomatous condition mostly involving the cerebral cortex and overlying leptomeninges. A strong association of MA with neurofibromatosis type 2 has been documented in published articles. Herein we report a case of an otherwise healthy 13-year-old boy with no family history or stigmata of neurofibromatosis who presented with intractable seizur...
